## What Wordfence Does

Wordfence is a complete WordPress security platform. It is designed to protect a WordPress website through several security layers.

Its endpoint firewall filters malicious requests before they reach vulnerable WordPress code. Its login-security features add two-factor authentication, CAPTCHA, brute-force protection, and controls for XML-RPC authentication. Wordfence also provides IP blocking, rate limiting, Live Traffic, vulnerability alerts, and centralized management through Wordfence Central.

The malware scanner is one of the components of this security system. It checks files for malware signatures, backdoors, injected code, suspicious URLs, file changes, outdated components, and known vulnerabilities.

### Wordfence Setup and Interface

Wordfence requires a free or paid license key during setup. Once activated, you can access the firewall, scanner, login security, blocking, Live Traffic, tools, and global settings.

## What Malcure Malware Shield Does

[Malcure Malware Shield](https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-malware-removal/) is a **detection-focused security plugin**. Its primary job is to find malware that has already reached the site — across files, database records, and user accounts. It also provides scheduled monitoring that may help identify signs of infection or reinfection earlier.

The scanner inspects various file types including images and archive files, because malware increasingly hides inside binary files that scanners may skip. Checksum verification compares core, plugin, and theme files against official repository data and flags anything that has changed. Database tables are inspected for malicious code, and user accounts are audited for behavioural anomalies such as unexpected privileges, application passwords and unusual account metadata.

This makes Malcure Malware Shield useful when a website is displaying **redirects**, **search-engine spam**, **unknown administrator accounts**, unfamiliar files, **browser security warnings**, or other signs that an infection may already exist.

### Malware Scanning

Both plugins scan files for malware using signature databases and both verify file integrity against WordPress.org checksums.

Wordfence uses a **configurable scan scope**. Wordfence provides several scan options that allow administrators to balance coverage, scan time, and server-resource use. For example, Wordfence offers an option to scan images, binary, and other files as if they were executable. It is available as a scan option but is disabled by default during a standard scan.

### Database Inspection and User-Account Audit

Both plugins inspect database content for malware, but the scope and reporting differ.

Wordfence examines posts, pages and comments for known dangerous URLs or suspicious content. It also checks selected WordPress core, plugin and theme options.

Malcure Malware Shield scans database records for malicious code patterns and reports the exact table, row ID, matched signature, and threat class for each finding — users can inspect the flagged records directly from the plugin interface without opening phpMyAdmin.

### Firewall and Attack Prevention

Wordfence offers a substantially broader set of preventive controls. Wordfence combines an endpoint Web Application Firewall with configurable rate limiting and blocking controls. Its broader security suite also includes Live Traffic, brute-force protection, two-factor authentication and, on eligible paid plans, country blocking and the real-time IP blocklist.

Malcure Malware Shield does not offer login security as a feature. ### Monitoring and Alerts

Wordfence can send configured email alerts for scan findings, login lockouts, user sign-ins and large increases in attack activity. Live Traffic is available in the free version and provides a real-time view of requests hitting the site. Premium adds more granular alert configuration.

Malcure Malware Shield takes a different approach to monitoring. Rather than real-time attack alerts, it focuses on **scan-driven monitoring**: automatic scans run on the schedule you set, and an email notification arrives when each scheduled scan completes. It sends a weekly security pulse with security-relevant activity across the past week. The 100-day security event history supports post-incident review and investigation. Notification recipients can include the licensee, registrant and additional CC addresses, which agencies use to route alerts to the right person when deploying Malcure across multiple sites.

### Remediation Options

Wordfence allows file deletion and repair directly from the scan results interface, in both free and Premium versions. It can repair supported repository files, display file differences, and delete files. These tools are available in the free plugin, although they should be used carefully on customized files.

Malcure Malware Shield provides location information for supported detected findings, but file repair, deletion, and whitelisting are part of [Malcure Advanced Edition](https://malcure.com/malware-removal-plugin/). ### Command-Line Scanning (Scanning via WP CLI)

Wordfence CLI is a separate Python-based command-line scanner intended for server and operations use. It operates independently from the WordPress plugin and is designed for server administrators, hosting providers, and infrastructure-level scanning.

**Malcure’s WP-CLI integration is built directly into the Advanced Edition of the plugin**. This means the WP-CLI commands follow the plugin’s scanning workflow and use the same threat-definition source as the browser-based interface. It works even when `/wp-admin` is unavailable, which matters for incident response on broken sites.

**Wordfence’s Free** version includes its endpoint firewall, malware scanner, 2FA, CAPTCHA, brute-force protection, and several file-remediation tools. Newly released firewall rules and malware signatures reach free users after a 30-day delay.

**Wordfence Premium** removes that delay and adds features such as the real-time IP blocklist, country blocking, enhanced scheduling, Audit Log access, and premium support.

The free version of Malcure Malware Shield scans files, database records, users, images, and archive files, schedules recurring scans, and uses the same threat-intelligence definitions as the paid scanner.

**Malcure Advanced Edition** adds repair, deletion, inspection, file and database whitelisting, advanced filters, WP-CLI automation, and premium support.

## Why can Wordfence and Malcure return different scan results?

Wordfence and Malcure use different scanning engines, malware signatures, heuristics, integrity checks, scan configurations and classification methods. As a result, their findings will not always be identical.

Several factors can cause the two scanners to produce different results:

### A. The detection rules are different.

Each security vendor maintains its own **malware signatures**, **pattern-matching rules**, **integrity checks** and **classification criteria**.

A fragment of code may match a Malcure Malware Shield detection rule without matching a Wordfence rule, or vice versa. This happens because scanners use different signatures, assign different risk levels to suspicious code or receive information about newly discovered malware at different times.

Wordfence states that users of Wordfence Free receive newly released malware signatures after a 30-day delay, while its paid plans receive malware signatures in real time. Malcure states that its free and paid users scan against the same threat definitions.

Consequently, a recently discovered infection may be detected by one scanner before it is detected by another.

### B. The scan scope and configuration may be different.

A standard Wordfence scan does not examine images, binaries, PDFs, and other files as executable content unless the relevant option is enabled.

Malcure Malware Shield includes those file types in its normal scan. If malicious code is stored in a file with an image or other misleading extension, Malcure may detect content that the standard Wordfence configuration skips.

Other factors can also affect coverage, including:

- excluded files or directories;
- unreadable files or insufficient permissions;
- interrupted or incomplete scans;
- memory and execution-time limits; and
- differences in how symbolic links, external directories or unusually large files are handled.

A scanner can only report on content that it successfully accesses and analyses.

### C. The database-scanning methods are different.

Malware is not always stored in files. Attackers can also place malicious scripts, redirects, spam links, rogue administrator records and other payloads inside the WordPress database.

Wordfence checks for suspicious content and dangerous URLs in posts, pages, comments and WordPress options used by the core, plugins and themes.

Malcure Malware Shield scans database tables using database-specific signatures and displays the exact location: the **table name**, the **row ID**, the **matched signature**, and reported threat classification. The answer depends on what you are trying to protect, what you are trying to find, and what your website security requirements are.

## Can Wordfence and Malcure Work Together?

Yes. The two plugins are designed for different areas of the security workflow, and running both can combine Wordfence’s preventive controls with Malcure’s **additional malware-investigation** and scheduled-monitoring workflow.

Wordfence helps block malicious requests and protect login access through its firewall, login-security and two-factor-authentication features. Malcure Malware Shield runs scheduled scans to check for signs of infection or reinfection across files, database, and user accounts.

In internal compatibility tests using Malcure Malware Shield 19.9.6 and Wordfence 8.2.2 on WordPress 7.0.2, PHP 8.3.6 and Apache/2.4.58 (Ubuntu) Server, we did not observe a direct plugin conflict. This was not a performance or exhaustive compatibility test, and results may vary by configuration.
